Tauro vs Scruffs: Pro Flex Plus vs Ranger and Rampage (2026)

Tauro Ranger slim fit work trousers worn on site

Written by the Tauro Workwear team, ex-tradesmen turned workwear trouser designers

Short answer: Tauro vs Scruffs comes down to fabric and how you buy. The Scruffs Pro Flex Plus is a light, 4-way stretch nylon trouser with more leg lengths and trade counter availability. The Tauro Rampage and Tauro Ranger are cotton-rich slim-fit trousers with removable Cordura holster pockets, sold direct for £64.99 and £74.99.

We get asked about Tauro vs Scruffs more than any other brand. Fair enough. Scruffs is the trouser half the lads on any site in the country are wearing, and the Pro Flex Plus is its slim, stretchy flagship. So here is a straight comparison from a small team of ex-tradesmen who make the other option. We will tell you where Scruffs is better, because in a few places it is.

All Scruffs prices and specs below are from the retailer's UK listing (Screwfix, Toolstation and B&Q), checked October 2026. Sources are listed at the end.

Two things Scruffs does genuinely well

You can have them on today. Scruffs is stocked by Screwfix and Toolstation, and B&Q carry the range too. Split your trousers on a joist at 10am and, stock permitting, you can click and collect a new pair from the counter on the way to the next job. We sell direct by post. We cannot beat a trade counter on that, and we will not pretend to.

The size and stretch range is wide. Screwfix lists the standard Pro Flex Plus with 30", 32" and 34" legs and waists from 28". The fabric is 92% nylon and 8% elastane with 4-way stretch throughout, which is a lot of give. If you spend your day climbing in and out of loft hatches or squatting at sockets, that stretch is real and you feel it.

What is the Scruffs Pro Flex Plus actually like?

It is a lightweight synthetic trouser. The non-holster version is listed at 200 g/m², which is light for a work trouser, and the 4-way stretch nylon moves with you. Cordura sits on the top-loading knee pad pockets. The holster version adds two zipped holster pockets, a cargo pocket, rule pocket, phone pocket and a secure zipped pocket. Screwfix reviewers rate the standard version 4.7 out of 5 from 22 reviews, which is a decent sample.

The Pro Flex Holster (no Plus) is a different trouser. Toolstation list it at £57.99 in a 48% polyester, 27% elastomultiester, 25% cotton blend at 250 gsm. The Trade Flex sits lower again at £47.59 on Screwfix, in 81% polyester and 19% cotton at 250 g/m², with one holster pocket. If you are comparing on price alone, those are the ones to look at. This post focuses on the Pro Flex Plus because it is the closest match to what we make.

Where does Scruffs win?

  • Availability. Trade counters everywhere. Nothing beats it when you need a pair today.
  • Leg lengths. Short, regular and long. Our trousers come in a 32" regular leg only. If you are 5'7" or 6'3", that matters.
  • Waist range at the small end. Scruffs starts at 28". We start at 30".
  • Raw stretch. 8% elastane in a 4-way nylon will out-stretch our 2% elastane fabric. No argument.
  • Review volume. 22 reviews on one Screwfix listing. We have 6 verified reviews on the Rampage (4.83 out of 5) and 7 on the Ranger (4.14 out of 5). We are a younger brand and our numbers are smaller. That is just true.

Where does Tauro win?

Fabric you can live in. The Pro Flex Plus is a synthetic trouser, and the Screwfix listing for the holster version marks it as non-breathable. The Ranger is 98% cotton with 2% elastane. On second fix in a new build with the heating on, or in a loft in July, cotton breathes in a way nylon does not. The Rampage is 60% cotton, 38% polyester, 2% elastane: still cotton-rich, with a bit more polyester for toughness.

More Cordura in more places. Scruffs puts Cordura on the knee pad pockets. We put 100% polyamide Cordura on the knee pad pockets, the back pockets and the thigh pocket, plus the holster mounts on the Ranger. Those are the bits that wear through first when you are kneeling on screed or sliding down a trench edge.

Removable holster pockets. The Pro Flex Plus Holster has holster pockets built in. The Rampage and Ranger holsters come off. Wear them for first fix with a pocket full of screws, take them off for a finishing day or the drive to the merchant. Our Tauro vs Snickers comparison goes into why we went removable.

Price. Rampage £64.99 against £72.99 for the Pro Flex Plus Holster at Screwfix. That is £8 a pair. The Ranger at £74.99 is £2 more, for 98% cotton and Cordura in more places.

Free returns by post. Screwfix and Toolstation both give you 30 days, but non-faulty items need to be unused and in their original packaging, and Toolstation charge a £9 collection fee for unwanted supplier-delivered items. Our returns are free within 30 days.

What about fit?

Honest answer: both are slim. Scruffs describes the Pro Flex Plus as slim fit, although one Screwfix spec table calls the standard version Regular. Ours are cut slim through the thigh and leg. The difference is in how the fabric sits. A light 4-way nylon clings and stretches. A cotton-rich trouser with 2% elastane holds its shape more like a pair of jeans. Try both and you will know which you prefer inside a day.

Our trousers are cut slim, not small. If you are between sizes or coming from baggy workwear, size up on the waist. The size guide has the measurements.

Who should still buy Scruffs?

  • Anyone who needs a 30" or 34" leg. We only make a 32" regular, and a trouser that is the wrong length is the wrong trouser.
  • Anyone with a 28" waist.
  • Anyone who needs trousers today. Rip a pair on a nail at 9am and Screwfix is the answer, not us.
  • Anyone who wants maximum stretch above everything else. If you are a fitter who lives on his knees under kitchen units and wants the trouser to feel like trackies, the 8% elastane Pro Flex Plus will suit you.
  • Anyone on a tight budget who does not need the Plus. The Trade Flex at £47.59 is cheaper than any of our trousers.

Tauro vs Scruffs: the verdict

If you want a light, very stretchy synthetic trouser you can buy at the counter in your leg length, buy the Scruffs Pro Flex Plus. It is a good trouser and the reviews back that up.

If you want cotton-rich fabric, Cordura on the back pockets and thigh as well as the knees, removable holsters and a lower price, the Rampage is our pick for most trades, and the Ranger is the one for hot work and all-day comfort. You can see the full range in our slim fit work trousers collection, and our guide to the best work trousers UK puts both brands alongside the rest of the market.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tauro better than Scruffs?

It depends on what you need. Scruffs Pro Flex Plus is the stretchier, lighter trouser with more leg lengths and you can collect it from a trade counter. Tauro is cotton-rich, has removable Cordura holster pockets and costs less: the Rampage is £64.99 against £72.99 for the Pro Flex Plus Holster at Screwfix. Pick on fabric and fit, not on the badge.

What is the Scruffs Pro Flex Plus made of?

The Screwfix listings, checked October 2026, give 92% nylon and 8% elastane with 4-way stretch throughout and Cordura reinforced knee pad pockets. The non-holster version is listed at 200 g/m². That makes it a light, very stretchy synthetic trouser, quite different from the cotton-rich fabric Tauro uses on the Ranger (98% cotton, 2% elastane).

What is a good Scruffs alternative with holster pockets?

The Tauro Rampage is the closest like-for-like. It has removable Cordura reinforced holster pockets, Cordura on the knee pad pockets, thighs and back pockets, a slim fit and costs £64.99 with free UK delivery. If you want a cotton-rich fabric that breathes better in summer, the Ranger at £74.99 is 98% cotton with 2% elastane.

Do Scruffs or Tauro knee pad pockets meet EN 14404?

Neither trouser listing claims EN 14404 certification for the trouser and pad together. Tauro knee pad pockets take standard inserts but are not EN 14404 certified, and the Scruffs Screwfix listings we checked do not state any certification. If your site requires certified knee protection, use a certified pad system or strap-on pads that carry the standard themselves.

Do Scruffs Pro Flex Plus trousers come in short and long legs?

Yes. Screwfix lists the standard Pro Flex Plus in 30", 32" and 34" leg lengths, and waists from 28". The holster version listings we checked were 32" leg. Tauro trousers come in a 32" regular leg only, with waists from 30" to 40", so if you need a 30" or 34" leg, Scruffs is the better bet today.
